The Inheritance

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later.

Fandango’s Story Starter #257

The Inheritance

They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later.

Mine wasn’t hidden in old letters or forgotten photographs.

It lived at every family gathering.

It whispered through hushed conversations that stopped when children entered the room.

It clinked softly inside glasses that were quietly refilled.

It hid behind excuses.

“He had a hard day.”

“She’s under a lot of stress.”

“That’s just how our family is.”

For generations, the secret wore a different face but carried the same name.

Alcohol.

With it came raised voices.

Broken promises.

Doors slammed harder than necessary.

Apologies that never lasted longer than the next bottle.

As a child, I thought every family had these silences.

As an adult, I realised they didn’t.

Looking back through the branches of my family tree, I didn’t find a curse.

I found a pattern.

And patterns can be broken.

The day I chose to put my glass down for good wasn’t dramatic.

There were no speeches.

No audience.

Just a quiet promise made to myself.

I would not pass this inheritance to another generation.

Today, when I look at my children and grandchildren, I know the family history didn’t end with the secret.

It continued with the choice.

People often say that blood is thicker than water.

Perhaps.

But love is stronger than both.

Sometimes the greatest family legacy isn’t what we inherit.

It’s what we refuse to pass on.
