Above the Lights

They called it progress.
The towers climbed so high they pierced the clouds, while silent aircraft drifted between them like mechanical birds.
From above, the city looked alive.
Millions of lights.
Millions of lives.
Millions of people…
who rarely looked at the sky anymore.
The streets below never slept.
Time had become currency.
Silence had become a luxury.
The stars had disappeared long before anyone noticed.
One evening, an old woman stepped onto the rooftop of the tallest tower.
In her hands she carried nothing but a tiny lantern.
People laughed.
“What good is one light in a city of millions?”
She smiled.
“It isn’t the city I’m trying to illuminate.”
She raised the lantern toward the heavens.
For the first time in decades…
someone looked up.
Then another.
And another.
One by one, faces lifted from glowing screens toward the dark blue sky.
Hidden beyond the haze, the first stars patiently waited.
They had never left.
Only humanity had forgotten where to look.
