Missy’s MAD Challenge # 100
The Secret Keeper

I didn’t mean to keep the secret.
At first, I thought I was protecting someone else.
Then days became years, and silence became a language I spoke more fluently than truth.
The secret settled quietly inside me.
It borrowed my voice.
Changed the way I smiled.
Taught me to measure every conversation before I let a single word escape.
People often ask whether secrets become heavier with time.
They don’t.
They become part of your bones.
You stop carrying them because they begin carrying you.
One morning, I looked in the mirror and couldn’t remember who I had been before the silence.
That’s when I understood.
I hadn’t been protecting the secret.
The secret had been protecting the frightened version of me who believed the truth would destroy everything.
But fear is a poor guardian.
So I opened the door.
Not because the secret had grown weaker—
but because I had finally grown stronger.
Some prisons are built with walls.
The quietest ones
are built with words
we never dare to speak.
With love, coffee, poetry, and stardust,
