Fandango’s Story Starter #253This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
The auctioneer smiled and announced that the next item for sale was my future.
The Highest Bid

The auctioneer smiled and announced that the next item for sale was my future.
The room erupted in murmurs.
I laughed at first, convinced it was part of the entertainment. Surely no one could sell a future.
Then the spotlight found me.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the auctioneer continued, “a life filled with possibilities. Untold adventures. Heartbreaks. Miracles. Regrets. Who would like to place the opening bid?”
Hands rose immediately.
“I bid success.”
“I bid wealth.”
“I bid power.”
The numbers climbed higher.
Someone in the back offered fame.
Another bid eternal youth.
Each offer was greeted with approving nods, as though my life could be measured by what it contained rather than how it was lived.
I remained silent.
When the room finally settled, the auctioneer looked directly at me.
“Do you accept the highest bid?”
I stood slowly.
“No.”
A ripple of confusion spread through the audience.
“You misunderstand,” the auctioneer said. “Everyone’s future belongs to someone.”
“Perhaps,” I replied. “But not mine.”
I walked toward the stage, reached for the small wooden gavel, and gently placed it on the velvet-covered table.
“My future isn’t an object.”
“It’s a thousand choices I haven’t made yet.”
The room fell silent.
One by one, the bidders lowered their numbered paddles.
The auctioneer’s smile faded into something softer.
For the first time that evening, no one was trying to own tomorrow.
As I stepped outside, the morning sun was rising.
The future was still unwritten.
Exactly as it should be.
Some things have no price.
And the most valuable future is the one we choose for ourselves.
