Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge #376
Too Late
The town council finally listened after years of complaints.
“Something dangerous keeps flying through the park,” residents insisted. “At night mostly… odd cackling… broomstick traffic.”
So, one bright Monday morning, they installed a shiny red STOP sign on the oldest tree.
For three whole days, nothing happened.
People laughed. Kids played. Birds nested peacefully.
Then came Thursday. Fog rolled low between the trunks.
At exactly midnight—
THUD.
The next morning, they found her there. Black hat crooked. Broom lodged straight through the tree trunk. One striped stocking dangling helplessly in the breeze.
Pinned to the STOP sign was a note written in furious handwriting:
“Perhaps next time, put the sign BEFORE the turn.”
No one touched it.
By sunset, someone had quietly added another sign beneath it:
WITCH CROSSING. 🧹
