Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge

The Last Typewriter

The old typewriter sat untouched for years, gathering dust while the world rushed into screens, shortcuts, and voices speaking to machines.

One rainy afternoon, a writer rolled in fresh paper and typed two words:

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The keys struck harder than expected.

Suddenly—click-clack… ding.

Letters began appearing on their own.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO WRITE?

The writer blinked. “Something honest,” she whispered.

The machine paused so long she thought it had broken.

Then slowly, carefully, the typewriter answered:

I CAN GIVE YOU WORDS. BUT ONLY A HUMAN CAN GIVE THEM SOUL.

Outside, the rain softened. Inside, for the first time in years, the writer smiled and began.
