Abortion

Abortion

Abortion
is not a simple word.

Behind it
are bodies,
grief,
fear,
medical truths,
and impossible choices.

Every woman
carries her own story.

Some pregnancies
cannot survive.
Some threaten life.
Some arrive
through pain no one sees.

I believe
a woman should have
the right
to choose
over her own body.

And yet—
loss changes people.

Perhaps because
I have lost
so many pregnancies,
I know
how deeply life
can already exist
inside hope.

I have learned—
there is no judgment
stronger
than compassion.

And no choice
made lightly
by a grieving heart.

With love

Maggie, this is a very heartfelt and moving response to a harsh and controversial word that carries strong feelings on both sides of the issue. Your poem is so beautifully illustrated as well. What a gorgeous work of heart!

Thank you so much Marsha 💜
I wrote this some years ago, and got help now from AI to create the image.
Yes, it’s a harsh and loaded word.
Here in Spain, they call it an abortion, even if you loose the pregnancy. The doctors look at you, ah you are not catholic, abortion is a sin.

Seriously, I did not know that. How could anyone help it if they lose a baby? Babies that have too many problems abort naturally. Wow. I’m sure that must have been horrible on top of the horror of losing your baby. I have never been pregnant, so I never had to experience that horror either naturally or artificially. The closest I came to it was after my husband died, I took in a teen from our high school who was emancipated from her abusive mother. A friend of hers got pregnant and wanted me to take it. Being newly widowed, I said no, and so she threatened to have an abortion if I wouldn’t take it. I don’t know what happened, but she probably had an abortion.

I can understand why you said no. You had enough with yourself and the grief. And you shouldn’t give yourself a hard time for not taking the baby .

    On the subject of abortion

I’m so sorry for your losses, Maggie. They have made you very compassionate.

I didn’t take on the girl’s guilt, but it is a hard decision. I didn’t envy her the position she was in as a senior in high school with an unwanted child and no participating father for the child.

We have lived through an era in which sex means a recreational activity, even for those who have strong religious convictions. The sex drive is powerful, and we humans have not found an effective way to harness it without guilt, sorrow, or shame. If a person has an unwanted baby or loses a wanted one, the pain intensifies. Even if there is no baby produced, though, the pain still accumulates. That is one thing our religious organizations and we can’t seem to teach to our next generations. It is a conundrum.
