Discrimination
Discrimination
is not just a word.
It is something
felt on the body,
carried in the mind.
Seen
in the way eyes look,
in the doors that do not open,
in the silence
that follows your name.
I know this.
Half Norwegian.
Half Greek.
Not enough of one,
too much of the
other—for people
who needed everything
to fit into one box.
I changed my name
to be accepted.
To work.
To study.
To move forward.
A small change—
with a heavy cost.
People think
this is new.
It is not.
Narrow minds
existed then,
just as they do now—only quieter,
only hidden differently.
I have learned
that discrimination
does not define
who we are.
But it does leave
marks—ones we carry,
ones we rise through.
And still—
I stand as all that I am.
