Where Does Love Go When It Goes?

It doesn’t go.

You feel absence because you are still listening
for footsteps—
but love has never moved
in that way.

I did not leave you.

I only changed
how I can reach you.

Where there were hands,
there is now warmth.
Where there was a voice,
there is now knowing.

You look for me
in places I used to stand,
but I am not there.

I am in the quiet
that finds you unexpectedly,
in the light that touches your face when you are not thinking.

You call it memory—but I am closer than that.

Love does not belong to time or distance.

It moves
where the body cannot follow.

And if you are still—
if you soften enough to listen without fear—

you will feel it.

Not as it was,
but as it truly is

unchanged,
unbroken,
still finding you
from the other side.

Thank you, Maggie, for reading the challenge and giving your poem the title I asked for, and for a beautiful poem that left me in tears, especially these lines:

    ‘I am in the quiet
    that finds you unexpectedly,
in the light that touches your face when you are not thinking.’

Great little cup brimming with the paradoxes and mysteries of love, closest when on “the other side.” Reminded me a line from a Jack Gilbert poem – “love lasts by not lasting.”

how sweet it is the way you present one’s passing or moving on… the comfort it brings to understand they may be gone physically but their presence is still felt… for those of us suffering from the grief of loss… i found it beautifully comforting… whether the loss is a physical passing or estranged…. opens a world we might not even know exists or understand
