Here in the Canary Islands, spring does not break winter—
it visits.

Rain falls for a few days,
softening the hard ground,
coaxing green
from places that had forgotten how.

The hills change their mind.
Flowers appear
as if they have always been waiting
just beneath the surface.

I almost believe
it will last.

Walk slower.
Look longer.
Let the color settle
into my eyes.

But the wind returns—
dry, familiar, certain.

And still,
something has shifted.

Not lost—
only proven:

even here,
life remembers how to begin again.

I’ve never been to the Canaries, although I live near Norwich, home of the Canaries football team, so I enjoyed being transported to a place where ‘spring does not break winter—it visits, Maggie. I love the personification in these lines:

    ‘The hills change their mind.
    Flowers appear
as if they have always been waiting
    just beneath the surface.’

Yes, life remembers how to begin again.

Thank you Kim. This year we have had so much weather, storms and rain. I haven’t seen the island this green in the 15 years we have lived here.

What a lovely poem of your place. I have not also been there. This is beautiful lesson from nature: life remembers how to begin again. Thanks for joining in.
