Calima or Kalima is a term used to describe a meteorological phenomenon that occurs when fine sand and dust particles from the Sahara are lifted into the atmosphere and transported by prevailing winds.

Today, the sky disappeared.
The light turned orange —
like the sun had been filtered through another world.
From my window in Fuerteventura,
I watch the horizon fade.
They call it calima —
dust carried across the sea
from the Sahara.
But standing inside it,
breathing it,
feeling it settle on your skin…
it feels like more than that.
The air grows heavy.
Each breath becomes something you notice.
Each step outside — a quiet decision.
Inside, we close windows.
We listen more closely to the body.
To the lungs.
To the pulse.
To the quiet signals we often ignore.
They say it may be as strong as the one in February 2020 —
and maybe it is.
And we wait.
For the wind to change.
For the air to clear.
For the world to return to its edges again.
