FOWC – 31.03.2026

In response to Fandango’s One-Word Challenge:

Helmet

A helmet
is meant to protect.

To shield the head,
to guard what is vital,
to stand between
impact
and injury.

It is strength,
visible.
Safety,
worn.

But not all helmets
are made of metal.

Some are unseen.

The thoughts we choose not to share.
The emotions we keep contained.
The words we swallow
before they ever reach the surface.

Protection
does not always look like armor.
Sometimes,
it looks like silence.

Like distance.
Like a calm face
hiding a storm
no one else can see.

We build these helmets
over time.

From experience.
From hurt.
From moments
where being open
felt like too much.

And they serve a purpose.

They keep us steady
when the world feels too loud.
They soften the blows
we are not ready to take.

But here is the quiet truth:

What protects us
can also
separate us.

Because a helmet
does not only block harm—
it also dulls connection.

Muffles voices.
Softens touch.
Creates space
where closeness might have been.

And so we are asked—
not to remove it completely,
but to become aware.

To know
when we are protected…
and when we are hidden.

Because true strength
is not in never taking it off.

It is in choosing
when it is safe
to do so.

To feel fully.
To hear clearly.
To be present
without the barrier.

A helmet
is not weakness.

But neither
is vulnerability.

And somewhere between the two—
is where life
is truly experienced.
