What We Keep Warm

The soup simmers slowly,
carrots softening into sweetness,
onions surrendering their sharpness
to something gentler.

I stand at the stove
longer than needed,
watching the surface
breathe.

There was a time
I cooked to impress—
measured, plated, perfect.

Now I cook to hold things together.

Salt between fingers,
steam against my face,
the quiet rhythm
of stirring.

Some meals are not about hunger,
but about staying.

About placing warmth
into a bowl
and offering it
without asking questions.

There are days
this is all I can give.

And still—
it is enough.

I could taste your soup, Maggie, delicious and satisfying, and a joy to make, yes, cooking to hold things together. I especially love the lines:

    ‘carrots softening into sweetness,
    onions surrendering their sharpness
    to something gentler’

    and

    ‘Salt between fingers,
    steam against my face,
    the quiet rhythm
    of stirring.’

The quiet comfort from cooking comes through beautifully in this poem. I love this:

“Some meals are not about hunger, but about staying.

About placing warmthinto a bowland offering itwithout asking questions.”

    And yes, it IS enough.

I totally agree, Maggie! And your poem is just that, “About placing warmth
    into a bowl
    and offering it
    without asking questions”

Love the comfort your words provide.
