Two Landscapes

The island teaches patience.

Wind combs the volcanic hills
day after day,
as if searching for something
it once lost.

Nothing rushes here.
Even the mountains
sit quietly in their dark bones,
watching centuries pass.

Inside me
another landscape breathes—

a northern lake
locked in winter ice,
skates cutting silver circles
across childhood afternoons.

Snow remembers
what heat forgets.

But here
the ground drinks sunlight instead,
and stubborn green
pushes through dust
after rain.

Two landscapes
living in one body:

one shaped by frost,
one by wind.

Both teaching
how to endure.

The voice of this poem comes across so strongly of experience, hard-won and authentic, and that’s what to me adds force to the imagery of the two landscapes, how the “Wind combs the volcanic hills,” “the mountains/ sit quietly in their dark bones,” “the ground drinks sunlight,” all speaking of endurance. So beautifully portrayed, Maggie!

Patience and endurance described very well 👏

Interesting to see a couple of poems use ‘bones’ as metaphors in this prompt.

I love how you painted those two landscapes in words, Maggie. I love the personification of the mountains sitting ‘quietly in their dark bones, watching centuries pass’ and the description of the ‘northern lake locked in winter ice’ and the ‘skates cutting silver circles across childhood afternoons.’
