This week’s theme is to choose a singer or songwriter born in March, and my choice is Lady Gaga, born March 28, 1986.

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she is known for her bold artistry, theatrical performances, and constant reinvention. But beyond the avant-garde costumes and spectacle, Gaga has always been, at her core, a songwriter and musician.

For this post, I chose a song from the 2018 film A Star Is Born — a role that showed the world a more stripped-back, emotionally raw side of her.

My song choice is Shallow.

Written by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt, “Shallow” became a global success and earned Gaga an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

But awards aside, what makes this song powerful is its vulnerability.

It asks a simple question:

Are we happy in the shallow?
Or are we brave enough to dive deeper?

The song speaks about connection, risk, exposure — the courage to leave safe waters and truly feel. It builds slowly, then explodes emotionally, mirroring the journey of stepping into something unknown.

What makes Shallow even more powerful is the partnership behind it.

Bradley Cooper didn’t just act in A Star Is Born — he committed fully to the music. He trained his voice, learned to perform live on stage, and worked closely with Lady Gaga to make the performances feel authentic rather than polished. Their chemistry wasn’t manufactured; it was built on mutual artistic respect.

Off-screen, they’ve maintained a warm friendship rooted in that collaboration. There’s something beautiful about two artists meeting in vulnerability rather than ego. You can feel that in the live performances — especially during their Academy Awards duet, which felt intimate, almost suspended in time.

Sometimes a song becomes bigger than the film it came from.

Shallow did that.

It became about stepping into truth. About daring to be seen. About trusting someone enough to jump into deeper water.

And maybe that’s why it resonates across generations.

Well I have always loved Lady Gaga she’s always been a hit with me apart from some of her dubious fashion choices (a dress made of raw beef to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Designed by Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti) and I agree with everything you’ve said about this song it a true testament to her real talent. Great choice Maggie 💜😘😘

This was a wonderful choice. I have seen the original, the Kristofferson/Streisand remake- but not this version of A Star is Born- you have surely whetted my appetite to do so!

We are kindred spirits, Maggie. I almost went with this song myself. I may even be singing along right now. Of course, not nearly as good as Gaga can do it herself. But she does inspire. Watching her — aaah such a powerful performer.

Gaga’s one of the most amazing artists of our time…is there anything she can’t or hasn’t done…the French Olympics, at the Super Bowl on her own (which was one of the best half times ever) and then with Bad Bunny….she sets the standard for setting her own path which is inspiring….

Yes, one of Lady Gaga’s best songs 🎵. And a great movie where we got to see how a great actress she’s too.

I’m a fan of this movie (the earlier versions), but I’ve never seen this version. I’m not a big fan of either of the stars and historically those are such big shoes to fill, I didn’t want to be disappointed. Based on that video alone though I’m going to watch it now. Just in that clip Lady Gaga shows an amazing vulnerability and I want to see how she plays the role. And that was a really good song!
