“Hushed and Still” by Simie Maryles.

Hushed and Still

The snow does not fall here —
it rests.

Streetlight gathers it
into a soft gold halo,
as if the night has chosen
one small corner of the world
to forgive.

Footsteps press their quiet signatures
into the pale road.
A man walks between two shadows
that breathe and pull gently at their leads,
companions tethered not by rope
but by rhythm.

Windows glow
like careful promises.
Inside, kettles hum.
Someone waits without knowing
they are waiting.

The trees lean inward,
heavy with listening.

Nothing moves loudly.
Even the moon seems
to lower its voice.

And yet —
in the middle of this stillness —
life persists:

breath clouding the air,
paws padding,
light holding against the dark.

Not all journeys require witness.
Some are meant to be
hushed
and still.

A really great ekphrastic poem, Maggie. Very well written with images that stick in my mind. The foot prints, the shadows pulling, the kettle on… really great!

Absolutely beautiful! I am especially touched by these lines:
    “The trees lean inward,
    heavy with listening.”
Simie will be reading the posts that use her image….I know she will LOVE this! Thank you for posting! You’ve truly captured the mood of the painting itself, and certainly the title she gave the painting!
