Smooth

Smooth

Such a satisfying word. It glides. It doesn’t stumble. It doesn’t catch.

Smooth skin. Smooth stones polished by years of waves. Smooth voices that calm a room before anyone realises they were tense.

I’ve always admired smoothness — the way some people move through life without visible friction, as if nothing ever scrapes them raw.

But then I think about stones.

They’re only smooth because something kept rubbing against them. Water. Sand. Time.

Maybe smooth isn’t the absence of struggle. Maybe it’s what struggle leaves behind.

The rough edges don’t disappear overnight. They’re worn down slowly, almost invisibly, until one day you realise you don’t react the same way you used to.

That something that once felt jagged now feels… manageable.

There’s a kind of smooth that is grace.
And a kind that is avoidance.

I’m learning the difference.

I don’t want to be untouched by life. I just want to be softened by it.

If smooth is what happens after friction,
then maybe I’m still in the shaping.

And that’s okay.
