The sky burned long after the sun was gone.
From the doorway, she watched the trees stand black and leafless against the blaze, as if winter had stripped them for judgment. The deck lights glowed small and steady, refusing the dark.
Inside, the house was quiet now—too quiet.
December had taken more than the leaves.
She stepped onto the cold boards, breath clouding the air, and let the last light settle into her bones.
Tomorrow would come, pale and ordinary.
But tonight, the horizon still remembered how to burn.
