Nonremittal

Nonremittal is what does not ease.

It is pain that does not lessen.
A silence that does not return
what was given.

It is the letter unanswered.
The apology unreceived.
The tension that does not dissolve
with time.

Some things remit—
storms pass,
fevers break,
anger cools.

But some things remain.

I have learned
that not everything softens
on its own.

Some things require release.
Some require forgiveness.
Some require distance.

And some—
if left untouched—
stay nonremittal
forever.
