This week’s theme is to choose a song that gets stuck in your head. Some songs are catchy. Some are repetitive. And then there are songs that stay with you because they attach themselves to memory.
My choice is Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, released in 1991 on their self-titled album (often called The Black Album).
1991 is also the year my firstborn came into this world.
So when I hear the opening notes — that unmistakable, gentle guitar intro — I’m not just hearing a song. I’m stepping back into a year that changed everything for me. A year when life suddenly became bigger, more fragile, more meaningful.
Written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the song was originally a deeply personal piece, never intended to be a big single. It was born from vulnerability — something Metallica wasn’t always publicly associated with at the time. Yet it became one of their most iconic tracks, proving that even the heaviest bands can carry tenderness.
On the surface, Nothing Else Matters is a love song. But it’s more than romantic love. It’s about trust. About opening yourself up. About the kind of connection that makes the rest of the noise fade away.
When you hold your child for the first time, the world narrows in exactly that way. Nothing else matters.
Maybe that’s why the song has stayed with me for decades. It doesn’t just loop in my head — it loops through my life. Through milestones. Through memories. Through becoming a mother.
Some songs are earworms.
Others are anchors.
This one is both.
So close, no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words, I don’t just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
So close, no matter how far
It couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words, I don’t just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know, yeah, yeah
So close, no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters
