Have you ever unintentionally broken the law?

I wouldn’t say I’ve ever deliberately broken the law.
But unintentionally? Probably yes.
When we moved from Norway to the Canary Islands in 2011, we quickly discovered that every country has its own invisible rulebook. Things that were perfectly normal back home were suddenly… not.
Paperwork rules. Registration deadlines. Housing regulations. Driving laws. Even small everyday habits that you don’t think twice about until someone says, “You can’t do that here.”
It wasn’t rebellion.
It was ignorance.
And there’s a big difference.
Moving country teaches you humility. You realise how much you don’t know. You learn that laws are shaped by culture, history, politics and local realities. What feels obvious in one place is completely different in another.
I think most of us have probably broken a rule at some point without knowing it. Not because we’re reckless, but because we’re human — and life doesn’t come with a global instruction manual.
What matters is this:
When you learn better, you do better.
Living abroad has taught me to ask more questions. To read the fine print. To respect that every place has its own rhythm and structure.
And also — to forgive myself for not knowing everything.
Because none of us do.
