Immortality Is Not What We Think

Immortality is not the body refusing to age.

It is not marble statues
or names carved into stone
that outlast the hands that shaped them.

It is smaller.
Softer.
Stranger.

It is the way a grandmother’s phrase
slips from your mouth
without permission.

It is a song that still trembles in someone’s chest
long after the singer is gone.

It is the whisper behind the veil
that says,
“I am not finished.
I am simply elsewhere.”

We misunderstand eternity.
We imagine it as endless time.

But perhaps immortality
is impact.

A kindness that ripples forward.
A truth that refuses burial.
A story that insists on being told
through new lips,
new hands,
new hearts.

Nothing truly loved disappears.
It changes rooms.

And maybe that is the secret.

Immortality is not living forever.
It is being remembered
by light.
