When Sound Is Not the Center

If I could not hear,
the world would not fall silent —
it would rearrange itself.

Doors would not slam,
but shoulders would tense.
Laughter would not ring,
but eyes would crease,
mouths would widen
like sudden sunlight.

An apple would still crack
between teeth,
though I would know it
only by the firmness
against my jaw,
the sweet rush spreading
across my tongue.

I once learned to speak
with my hands.

Not because sound was gone for me,
but because it never arrived for him.

His world moved in gestures —
quick, precise, alive.
Silence was not empty there;
it was attentive.

I learned that voices
are not always carried by air.
Sometimes they live
in fingertips,
in eyebrows raised,
in the urgency of a wave.

Without hearing,
you would watch more closely.
You would feel vibration
through floors,
through ribs,
through the small shift
of someone entering a room.

Life would not be lesser.
Only different —
tuned to light
instead of noise.

This is a great write Maggie – I love the ending:

    ’tuned to light
    instead of noise.’

      Thank you Ange ❤️.
I used my experience with working with special needs children, and learning sign language.

Yes I gathered that – as I used Makaton in a past life I worked with people who had learning disabilities – I loved it 🙌

Yes, similar in Norway — we began with sign support, but my student learned full Norwegian Sign Language. He lost his hearing at two after meningitis, but he was sharp and followed the same curriculum as the others. It was a powerful experience for me as a special need teacher.

Your poem resonates with me, Maggie. I like the way you use contrasts to evoke the rearrangement of the world. I particularly like these lines:

    ‘An apple would still crack
    between teeth,
    though I would know it
    only by the firmness
    against my jaw,
    the sweet rush spreading
    across my tongue.’

My youngest grandson didn’t speak until recently and used facial expressions sign language to communicate, so I appreciate the lines:

‘His world moved in gestures —
    quick, precise, alive’

    and

    ‘…voices
are not always carried by air.
    Sometimes they live
    in fingertips,
    in eyebrows raised,
in the urgency of a wave.’

I’m deeply touched by that — thank you, Kim . I’ve always felt that communication finds a way, even when it changes shape.

Indeed. An excellent poem. The problem with hearing loss is that for a long time, you can almost hear and strangely see. Until…
