This week’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt asks us to choose a song that makes us think about life — and my choice is Hello Heaven, Hello by YUNGBLUD.
At 9 minutes and 6 seconds, this is not a song you half-listen to.
It’s a journey.
Hello Heaven, Hello unfolds slowly, deliberately, like a conversation with existence itself. It moves through vulnerability, anger, hope, doubt, surrender — the full human spectrum. It doesn’t rush toward resolution. It allows space. And that, in itself, feels like a statement about life: that not everything is meant to be neatly answered.
This is music that asks you to stay present. To feel. To confront what it means to be alive, searching, broken, and still reaching upward.
YUNGBLUD has always stood slightly outside the expected lines — unafraid of discomfort, unapologetic in emotion. That fearlessness has roots. Early in his career, he was taken under the wing of Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne, a lineage that makes sense when you hear the ambition and emotional scope of this track. There’s a sense of inheritance here — not in sound alone, but in spirit: the permission to be raw, to be strange, to be honest.
Hello Heaven, Hello feels like a conversation between earth and whatever lies beyond it. Between who we are and who we might become. It’s not about religion or certainty — it’s about wonder, fear, and the courage to keep asking questions even when answers don’t come.
Some songs entertain.
Some comfort.
And some — like this one — make you stop and think about your own life, your own journey, and what it means to still be here.

Lyrics :
Hello, are you out there?
Are you trying? Are you patient?
Are you blind?
Are you with me? Against me?
Don’t know me at all
Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, are you in there?
Do you still remember, or have you forgotten where you’re from?
Are you still scared of dying?
Scared of them finding out that you don’t know who you are?
And I don’t know what’s in my head, but I know what’s in my chest
I don’t know if I can make it, I don’t know if I can change it
But I know it’s how I feel, even if it isn’t real
I wanna feel alive, tell me, do you wanna feel alive?
Oh, I wanna feel alive
Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello (oh, I wanna feel alive)
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello (tell me, do you wanna feel alive?)
Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello (oh-oh)
Hello, hello, hello, hello (oh-oh)
Hello, hello, hello (oh-oh)
Since I was a little boy, I devised a windmill getaway
They kicked me in the mud, and they told me, “That’s the price you pay”
So tell me, are you gonna die with the lies that they forced inside your head?
Or are you gonna live by the thorns in what you said?
Little freak, gonna walk, they don’t talk
‘Til you’ve packed up and gone away
“Little boy, stupid boy, what you after each and every day?”
For it’s the fool who’s the last to jump off the edge
one step into heaven
But first, you’ll go to hell and back
(One step) one step into heaven
Are you gonna be the fool who’s the last to jump off the edge?
Don’t give a damn about what they said
Since I was a little boy, I always had a tear upon my face
They’d hit me in the mouth, and they told me, “It’s time to act your age”
So tell me, are gonna die in the pain that they all inflict on you?
Or are you gonna swim through the storm of what you have to do?
Little freak, gonna walk, they don’t talk
‘Til you’ve packed up and gone away
Little boy, stupid boy, what you after each and every day?
For it’s the fool who’s last to jump off the edge
one step into heaven
But first, you’ll go to hell and back
(One step) one step into heaven
Are you gonna be the fool who’s the last to jump off the edge?
Don’t give a damn about what they said
Little freak, gonna walk, they don’t talk
‘Til you’ve packed up and gone away
Little boy, stupid boy, what you after each and every day?
For it’s the fool who’s last to jump off the edge
one step into heaven
But first, you’ll go to hell and back
(One step) one step into heaven
Are you gonna be the fool who’s the last to jump off the edge?
Don’t give a damn about what they said
There’s a chance I won’t see you tomorrow
So I will spend today saying, “Hello”
And all the hopes and dreams I may have borrowed
Just know, my friend, I leave them all to you
Hello, hello
Hello
Hello, hello
Hello
That was powerful to hear that synth at the end
Look, hey
The lion looking down at you and I
We’re on the back of all the mankind
All the war, the pain, and thus
Yourselves, don’t forget yourselves
Hey, hey, hey
I’m missing out on all the love
I’m so oblivious to love
But, oh
You reminded me
I tried to write this song
It’s as good as gold
That was really fucking good
No synths at the end
I miss you, and I wish you’d hear this
A reverb after the chorus
Oh

Wonderful selection, Maggie. I would imagine that everyone thinks about heaven from time to time and this song offers a great inspirational message about being true to who you once were while seeking improvement, change, and a better path forward. The lyrics are deeply personal, addressing mental health, existential fears, and the search for meaning, making it feel like a raw, unfiltered conversation. It was difficult for me to take my eyes off this video with everything that was going on in it.
Thank you so much, Jim. I really appreciate how closely you listened — to both the song and what it carries.
That idea of being true to who we once were while still seeking change and a better path forward is exactly what stayed with me. It feels like an honest conversation rather than a performance, and I’m glad that came through.
And yes — the video is almost impossible to look away from. It feels like the visuals are carrying the same emotional weight as the music.
