Fandango’s One-Word Challenge |29.01.2026
In response to Fandango’s One-Word Challenge:

Today’s word is “grass.”
Grass
Grass was never supposed to look like this here.
Not on an island shaped by wind,
not on land that knows thirst better than overflow.
Yet here it is—
soft, vivid, almost disbelieving of itself.
Green spreading where dust once ruled.
Flowers daring to stay.
In fifteen years on the Canary Island Spain, I have never seen the island answer rain
with such generosity.
Never felt the ground breathe this deeply.
Grass teaches patience.
It doesn’t announce miracles—
it simply appears
after endurance has done its work.
This green is not excess.
It is memory returning.
The land reminding us
that even the driest places
remember how to live.
And walking through it,
you feel it underfoot—
not just grass,
but grace.
