What Was Never Explained

The tracks lead inward, but memory doesn’t.
It scatters — into kitchens, into mountains, into the way a man holds a child without speaking.

My grandfather was a teacher.
That mattered.
Words matter to regimes that fear thinking.

They came at night. They always do.
He told my grandmother to run west. She was pregnant, newly married, carrying more than one life. She walked for weeks over mountains that did not care who ruled the land, only that you kept moving.

She cut her hair. Covered it.
Survival sometimes looks like disappearance.

When she reached home, it wasn’t home anymore. Soldiers slept where animals once breathed. She lived upstairs, quiet as dust, careful not to let grief or fear fall through the floorboards. Her husband was in Grini. She never said his name too loudly.

Then the baby came — blue-eyed, blond.
Loved by the same uniforms that took her father away.

A soldier asked questions.
Letters moved.
Hope learned how to travel secretly.

No one told me what happened next. Silence became the inheritance. One day he was home. One day he was holding his daughter. That is all history gave us.

Years later, I saw the mark on his arm.
I asked what it was.

He cried.

I had never seen him cry before.
I never saw him cry again.

Some stories are not told because they are forgotten.
Some are not told because they are remembered too well.

Word count: 285

On days like this, remembrance isn’t only about places like Auschwitz.
It’s about teachers, mountain paths, hair cut short, letters passed quietly, and tears that finally escaped when a child asked an innocent question.

This is such a shocking memory, all the stories are. My relatives on my mother’s side all went to concentration camps. I never knew anyone beyond my grandparents.

So sad 😞. Now it’s up to you to letting the next generations remember and never forget 💔
