Today’s word: Clerk

Clerk

A clerk stands at the hinge of things—
between request and response,
between what is asked
and what is allowed.

They file moments into systems,
translate human need
into boxes, forms, numbers.
Order made from the everyday chaos.

A clerk sees more than they’re credited for:
the tired sigh behind a signature,
the nervous hope folded into an application,
the quiet relief when something finally goes through.

It’s not a grand role.
It’s a necessary one.

Clerk work is patience in practice—
accuracy, repetition, presence.
Small actions
that keep the larger world
from unraveling.

And sometimes,
a clerk is the only witness
to a life-changing moment
that looks, on paper,
utterly ordinary.
