Catenary

Uskedal river in Norway

A catenary is the curve a river makes
when it obeys gravity
without resistance.

It isn’t forced.
It isn’t straight.
It finds its shape
by yielding.

The river in Uskedalen taught me this
long before I knew the word.
It carried villages in its reflection,
mountains in its arms,
and our lives quietly along its bend.

Some say the name Uskedal / Uskedalen
comes from the curve of the river itself—
the way water bends and returns,
again and again,
through the valley.

Others say it is the mountains,
the shape of land and valley,
drawn downward by time,
that gave the place its name.

The name appears as early as 1403,
already formed,
already belonging to something older than certainty.

Perhaps it was never meant to be one answer.

A catenary is held not by tension,
but by balance.

And maybe that is how places endure—
not by being defined,
but by being felt.

Some homes remain in us
not as places,
but as curves.

A wonderful interpretation Maggie. The river of life never flows in a straight line.
    Thanks for joining in 😀
