This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
With a swift kick, the door splintered, revealing…
What the Door Couldn’t Keep

With a swift kick, the door splintered, revealing—
Not a monster.
Not a thief.
Not even the dramatic chaos my imagination had prepared for.
It revealed dust motes hanging in a shaft of light, furniture draped in sheets like polite ghosts, and a silence so thick it felt startled to be disturbed.
I stood there, foot still raised, heart racing, suddenly embarrassed by my own expectations. Years of warning stories had taught me that locked doors always guarded danger. Turns out, some doors only guard time.
The house exhaled, as if relieved.
Every room held traces of a life paused rather than ended: a cup left on a table, a book marked halfway through, shoes by the door waiting for feet that never returned. Nothing was broken — except the promise that someone would come back.
I walked through carefully, as though sound itself might offend the space. In the back room, sunlight spilled across the floor, illuminating a mirror leaning against the wall. Dust traced my reflection, softening the edges, making me look like a memory instead of a person.
That’s when I understood.
The door hadn’t been keeping something out.
It had been keeping something in — a story waiting for a witness.
I stepped fully inside, letting the door hang open behind me.
Some places don’t need to be protected anymore.
They just need to be seen.
