Profanity

There was a time I believed profanity lived only in words.
Sharp ones. Loud ones. The kind people gasp at or censor with asterisks.
But life taught me otherwise.
Profanity can be silence where truth should live.
It can be cruelty dressed as honesty.
It can be respect withheld, care ignored, love rationed.
Sometimes the most profane thing isn’t what is said —
it’s what is allowed.
I’ve heard swear words used tenderly,
punctuation for pain,
a release valve when language runs out of breath.
And I’ve heard perfectly polite sentences
do irreparable harm.
So now I listen deeper.
Not for the words that shock,
but for the intent beneath them.
Because profanity isn’t always vulgar language —
sometimes it’s the violation of the soul.
And reverence?
That can live even inside a curse,
if it’s spoken with truth.
