There have been many firsts in my life.
But one rises above the rest —
the day we packed up our house in Norway and moved to the Canary Islands with our two youngest daughters, just four and five years old, without ever having been here before.

Yes… we were told we were crazy.
Others simply smiled and said, “Why not?”

My husband had travelled here several times on health trips through the Norwegian hospitals for his psoriatic arthritis, but this — this was different.
This was not a treatment.
This was a leap.
A whole new chapter.

After six and a half hours on the plane, circling as we prepared to land on Gran Canaria, the tears came.
Unexpected.
Unstoppable.

For the first time in my life, I felt something settle deep in my soul —
a quiet knowing.

I am home.

Stepping out of the plane, feeling the warm air and the sun on my face…
pure magic.
As if my body remembered something before my mind could catch up.

I looked at our daughters — their eyes wide, round, sparkling with wonder —
and our eldest immediately asked,
“Where’s the swimming pool?”

True to form, once we had settled into our flat, they were already in their swimwear.
So yes — that very first day ended with a few perfect hours by the pool, laughter echoing off unfamiliar walls that would soon become ours.

That evening, I watched my first sunset in the Canary Islands.
The sky softened.
The light lingered.
And something inside me whispered,
You chose right.

Next year it will be 15 years since we arrived —
two suitcases each,
two small hands in mine,
and an entire life waiting to unfold.

Some first days don’t just begin something new.
