DailyPrompt—2150
Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

Yes — but never alone.
That has always been the magic, and the comfort.
In high school, I joined the choir as an extra class.
We performed musicals —
Annie, Hello, Dolly!, and a few others.
(Hello, Dolly! stole my heart.)
I loved it because I never had to stand in the spotlight by myself.
No solos — thank God.
If they had asked me to sing alone,
I probably would have bolted straight out the back door.
This was 1986,
and yet I can still feel the thrill of it —
the lights,
the soft hum of anticipation,
the security of blending my voice with others.
Visible, but protected.
Heard, but never exposed.
After high school, during a gap year,
I worked in a boarding school kitchen
and found another choir —
soul and gospel this time.
And suddenly I was singing
in front of thousands.
A massive performance,
filled with emotion, rhythm, and electricity.
And it was glorious.
Not because I felt brave…
but because I wasn’t alone.
I was held
by the strength of many voices,
lifted by harmony,
supported by sound.
Every performance I ever loved
was a shared one.
