A Red Day on the Calendar, A Heavy Memory in the Bones
Today, 6 December, is a día festivo here in Spain — Día de la Constitución, the day the country officially stepped into democracy in 1978, after the long and suffocating shadows of Franco’s regime.
Even writing his name sends a cold shiver through me.
Some wounds echo through generations; some histories stay imprinted in the land itself.
But this day…
This day marks the moment when light finally began to return.
When voices could rise again.
When Spain remembered what freedom felt like.
Living here, you still feel the weight of what came before — in the stories, in the silence of older generations, in the way people speak about that era with a lowered voice. But you also feel the pride, the resilience, the collective breath the country took in 1978 and never let go of.
A red day on the calendar, yes.
But also a red thread in history —
marking the passage from fear into possibility.
