Do you ever see wild animals?

Living out here on the islands is a little like sharing your days with a quiet, secret kingdom of animals.
We don’t have sharks, snakes, or poisonous insects — a blessing for someone as jumpy as me, haha —
but we do have our own cast of characters.
Some are adorable…
some a bit chaotic…
and some feel like spirit messengers walking beside you.

🐿 Chipmunks (the infamous, too-cute troublemakers)
They’re everywhere — photogenic, bold, and impossible to resist.
But people forget they carry diseases, and feeding them only makes the population explode.
So we admire them from a distance…
and laugh when they try to pretend they’re “just passing by.”

🐇 Rabbits & hedgehogs
Shy little shadows that appear at dusk. You see them only if you move slow enough.

🦎 Atlantic lizards & East Canary wall geckos
Sun worshippers. Bold, fast, and always watching you from a stone wall.
They look like tiny ancient guardians from another time.

Common ravens — my guides on this island
These are not just birds.
These are messengers.
Old souls with wings.
When a raven flies close, I always feel my guides — and sometimes Liam — whispering.

Common hoopoe (with their adorable crowns)
If angels had birds, they might look like these little creatures with feathered halos.

🦅 Falcons
Majestic, silent hunters, painting circles in the sky.

🐐 Wild goats
Masters of climbing cliffs you’d swear were impossible.

🐴 The Majorero Donkey
My favourite.
Around 200 of them remain — small, tough, African-origin donkeys unique to Fuerteventura.
They are gentle, soulful beings, and the only equine breed native to the archipelago.

So yes, I see wild animals —
but here, it feels more like the land offers them to you.
Each one carries its own spirit, its own meaning, its own whisper from nature.
This island isn’t just home…
it’s alive.
