What was your first ever videogame?
From Donkey Kong to Superfrog! 🐸
Well, I don’t know if it counts as a video game, but my first was Donkey Kong! 🤣
Yes, that famous gorilla who seemed determined to make life difficult for a little man trying to climb ladders, jump over barrels and rescue a girl.
Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?
Except those blasted barrels always seemed to know exactly where I was going! 😂
Back then, games didn’t need realistic graphics, complicated storylines or a hundred different buttons.
You had a screen, a few controls and a mission.
And if you failed, you simply started again.
And again.
And AGAIN!
Later came Superfrog, on the Amiga computer! 🐸
My baby brother was, and still is, a huge Amiga enthusiast, so those computers bring back some lovely memories.
I remember that little green frog jumping around the screen, collecting things and avoiding obstacles.
Apparently, my gaming career involved a gorilla throwing barrels at me and a frog trying to survive.
What a combination! 🤣
Looking back, those games were so simple compared with what we have today, but they were great fun.
No enormous downloads, endless updates or complicated online accounts to worry about.
Just switch it on and play.
Of course, I was never going to become a professional gamer. My talents were probably better suited to music, writing and shouting at the screen when that gorilla threw another barrel at me.
And if Donkey Kong ever comes looking for a rematch, I have just one thing to say:
Put those bloody barrels down and let me finish my coffee first!
