The Last Warning
Every evening, the old woman watched the sunset from her porch.
For fifty years, she had waited for the sign her grandmother described.
Dark clouds swallowing the sky.
A single golden flame piercing the darkness.
Tonight, it appeared.
Her hands trembled as she opened the dusty wooden box.
Inside lay a silver key and a note.
When the heavens open, unlock what sleeps beneath the house.
The ground began to shake.
From somewhere below came three slow knocks.
She smiled.
“About time.”
Then she turned the key.
And every light in the town went out.
