What’s the most underrated movie you’ve ever watched?
Oh, dear.
Now that’s a question!
First of all, it’s been so long since I sat down and watched a movie that I’m struggling to remember what I watched last.
And secondly…
Who decides whether a movie is underrated?
The critics?
The ratings?
The box office?
Because, quite frankly, I’ve never cared much about what the critics have to say.
If I enjoy a movie, I enjoy it.
If I don’t, I don’t.
It’s really that simple.
I’ve watched films that received wonderful reviews and wondered what all the fuss was about.
And I’ve enjoyed films that other people thought were terrible.
We’re all different.
We have different tastes, different senses of humour and different things that touch our hearts.
A film that leaves one person in tears might leave another person wondering when it’s going to end.
And that’s perfectly fine.
I don’t need a professional critic to tell me whether something is worth watching.
I’ll decide that for myself, thank you very much!
Of course, there was that unfortunate cinema experience with Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
I actually walked out.
But we’ve already discussed that particular adventure, and I have no intention of paying for another ticket just to give it a second chance.
These days, I spend far more time writing, creating music and following my other interests than sitting in front of the television watching films.
So perhaps there is a wonderful, terribly underrated masterpiece out there waiting for me.
Who knows?
But until I actually watch it, I suppose I’ll have to leave this question unanswered.
And if I eventually find one, I promise I’ll judge it by my own enjoyment.
Not by the number of stars somebody else decided to give it.
The best review of a movie isn’t always written by a critic. Sometimes it’s simply how you feel when the credits begin to roll.
