Share Your World – 19 October 2026

Another Monday, another Share Your World!

This week’s questions take us from glasses and flowers to a murder trial in North Carolina and the driving habits here on Fuerteventura.

Quite a mixture, isn’t it?

1. Do you wear glasses, contacts, bi-focals, or none?

Yes, I wear glasses.

I’ve worn glasses for many years and have changed them several times along the way.

In May this year, I decided to go back to progressive glasses.

It’s convenient having one pair for both near and far distances instead of constantly switching between different glasses.

Of course, getting used to progressive lenses again takes a little adjustment.

Sometimes you find yourself tilting your head up and down, trying to find that magical spot where everything comes into focus.

Who knew wearing glasses could involve so much head choreography?

2. What made you laugh last week?

This one started with laughter in complete disbelief, but today that laughter turned into genuine anger.

I’ve been following a murder trial in North Carolina.

During the trial, the prosecution presented a photograph of a handwritten note reportedly found on the defendant’s computer.

The photograph was introduced in connection with a handwriting comparison involving a note found at the murder scene.

Sounds serious, doesn’t it?

Well, here’s where things took an unexpected turn.

People following the trial discovered that the wording appeared in a viral meme circulating in Latin American countries.

My first reaction was to laugh in disbelief.

Had the defendant somehow created a viral meme?

Or was this simply something that had been shared across the internet countless times?

I couldn’t believe what I was watching.

But today, things took a much more serious turn.

The defence challenged the evidence in court and brought up the viral meme.

And according to what I watched, the prosecution’s response was that they didn’t know.

They didn’t know?

This defendant has been sitting in jail for four years awaiting trial.

Four years.

And apparently, nobody had thought to investigate whether the wording in this supposed piece of evidence was already circulating online?

I was absolutely fuming.

There was no apology that I heard, either.

Now, I understand that finding the same wording in a meme doesn’t automatically prove that a handwriting comparison is invalid. But surely the origin, authenticity and relevance of such material should be thoroughly examined before it is presented as evidence in a murder trial?

And what about the original digital file and its metadata?

Those are questions I would like answered.

This isn’t a television drama where we can laugh at an absurd plot twist and move on to the next episode.

A young woman lost her life. Her family deserves answers and justice.

And a man accused of her murder has spent four years behind bars awaiting trial. He deserves a fair trial based on properly examined evidence.

Whether he is guilty or innocent is for the jury to decide, based on the evidence presented in court.

But the evidence must be reliable, and the process must be fair.

The prosecution’s responsibility should never be simply to win a case.

It should be to seek justice.

So yes, last week I laughed.

Today, I was angry.

Because behind that viral meme are real people, real suffering and a decision that will change lives forever.

Justice is far too important to be treated carelessly.

3. What is your favourite flower?

Orchids.

I’ve always loved them.

There’s something so elegant and almost mysterious about these beautiful flowers.

Their shapes, colours and patterns are extraordinary. Some look like little works of art created by nature.

And there are so many different varieties.

Naturally, I have a particular weakness for purple orchids.

I wonder why!

4. What annoys you — misbehaving children, people, traffic, pets, decor in the house, or anything else?

The way some people drive here on Fuerteventura.

And to be fair, it doesn’t just annoy me.

It genuinely frightens me.

We have far too many serious traffic accidents on this island, including accidents where people lose their lives.

Some drivers seem to have absolutely no patience.

Speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving far too close behind other vehicles and taking completely unnecessary risks.

Sometimes I wonder whether people forget that they’re sharing the roads with other human beings.

When I’m driving, I must admit that my heart is often in my throat.

You can be as careful as possible yourself, but you cannot control what another driver decides to do.

And that’s what frightens me.

I wish people would slow down, keep a safe distance and remember that arriving a few minutes later is far better than not arriving at all.

A car isn’t a toy, and the road isn’t a racetrack.

Nobody’s appointment, holiday or hurry is worth another person’s life.

Gratitude

This week, I’m grateful for the little things that bring peace and balance into everyday life.

For my glasses, which allow me to enjoy the beautiful world around me.

For flowers, especially orchids, that remind me of nature’s extraordinary beauty.

For laughter, even when it comes from complete disbelief.

And for the relief of arriving home safely after being out on the roads.

Living in the mountains of Fuerteventura, I appreciate the tranquillity around our home.

The open sky, the sea in the distance, my animals nearby and a good cup of coffee.

Those moments when I can sit quietly and let the noise of the world fade away.

I’m also grateful that we have the freedom to ask questions, challenge what we’re told and speak up when something doesn’t seem right.

Because sometimes speaking up isn’t about taking sides.

It’s about believing that truth, fairness and justice matter.

And they should matter to everyone.

Wishing you all a peaceful week.

💜
