Forensic Memes 101: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up! 🤣🔨🐇
The Rabbit Academy of Courtroom Investigations
There are moments when watching a murder trial leaves you speechless.
And then there are moments when you scream “WHAT THE F*?!”** so loudly that your entire family comes running. 🤣
That was me on Friday.
There I was, sitting with my headphones on, following the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial in North Carolina, when the prosecution introduced something that nearly sent my coffee flying.
A Colombian meme.
Yes, you read that correctly.
A photograph showing a stack of Colombian banknotes and a handwritten Spanish message had apparently been recovered from the defendant’s computer or social-media material.
And according to courtroom commentary, prosecutors wanted the jury to compare that handwriting with the message found at Faith’s crime scene.
Excuse me?!
My husband and daughters immediately wanted to know what had happened.
When I explained that a Colombian meme had entered an American murder trial as potential handwriting evidence, they burst out laughing.
Honestly, you couldn’t make this stuff up. 🤣
Welcome to Forensic Memes 101
Now, here’s where things get interesting.
Members of the livestream community started searching for the photograph online.
A Facebook post containing the same image was found, dated May 19, 2020. Some viewers reported finding even earlier versions.
That raises one rather important question:
Just because someone has a photograph of handwritten words on their computer, does that mean they personally wrote them?
Of course not.
The judge reportedly allowed the jury to consider similarities between the writing samples, despite the defense’s objections.
But allowing a comparison is not the same as proving who wrote either message.
And that distinction matters enormously when someone is standing trial for murder.
The Rabbit Academy 🐇🔎
I usually watch the trial through Rabbit’s livestream, where we have somehow become a rather entertaining little classroom of amateur courtroom investigators.
We listen, question, compare notes, occasionally disagree, and sometimes discover things that deserve a closer look.
Our unofficial course for the weekend?
Forensic Memes 101: Just Because It’s on Your Computer Doesn’t Mean You Wrote It.
Meanwhile, my imaginary detective headquarters in Fuerteventura has everything an investigation requires:
Coffee. Headphones. A laptop. A magnifying glass.
And three gavels that are dangerously close to becoming airborne. 🔨🔨🔨
Bella, naturally, has been appointed Head of Gavel Security.
Whether she’ll protect the evidence or steal it remains to be seen. 🤣🐾
Behind the Laughter
There’s a serious reason this bothered me.
Faith Hedgepeth was a young woman whose life was brutally taken in 2012. Her family has waited fourteen years for answers.
And Miguel Salguero-Olivares, the man now standing trial, is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless the prosecution proves its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
I don’t know whether he is guilty.
I’m still listening.
But I believe evidence should be examined carefully, especially when its significance depends on assumptions about who created it.
A social-media image might be relevant. It might not be.
What matters is establishing what it actually proves.
That’s why I’m particularly interested in what the defense will ask during cross-examination.
Until Monday…
The Colombian meme has certainly given us something to discuss over the weekend.
And if Monday brings more surprises, I may need to reinforce the walls of my living room.
Because Detective Mags is running dangerously low on patience.
OBJECTION, YOUR HONOUR! FROM FUERTEVENTURA! 🤣🔨⚖️
All jokes aside, this post reflects my personal observations and questions about the evidence presented. It is not a conclusion about anyone’s guilt or innocence.

P.S. Did I mention that the defendant is from Guatemala, the meme features Colombian money, the murder trial is taking place in North Carolina, and I’m sitting in Fuerteventura, Spain, shouting objections through my headphones?
An international investigation nobody saw coming! 🌍🤣
The Rabbit Academy has officially gone global!
