The Midnight Reader
Every night at midnight, Clara heard footsteps in her kitchen.
The cupboards remained closed. Nothing was missing.
Except books.
Each morning, another novel appeared on the kitchen counter, opened to its final chapter.
Determined to catch the intruder, Clara hid behind the refrigerator.
Midnight struck.
A book floated from the shelf.
Pages turned.
Then a whisper.
“Terrible ending.”
Clara gasped.
The book dropped.
A transparent old woman appeared, looking thoroughly annoyed.
“Honestly, dear! I’ve been dead forty years, and nobody around here knows how to write a decent ending!”
