For dVerse Poets Pub – Open Link Night, Where Kim is our host.

Here’s how to take part in Prosery:

Write a piece of flash fiction of up to or exactly 144 words, including the given line in the order in which it has been given. You may add or change punctuation, but you may not add words in between the given ones.

The lines I chose to include from ‘Body’ in your Prosery are:“the dead were settling in under their mud roof and something was shuffling overhead”

Prosery:  Something shuffling overhead

The scratching began on the third night.

Grandmother had warned me never to sleep in the old cottage after sunset. Naturally, I stayed.

At midnight, the floor trembled. Beneath the house lay a forgotten burial chamber. I remembered the inscription carved into its entrance:

the dead were settling in under their mud roof
and something was shuffling overhead

I had always assumed the words described the living.

Then came three knocks from beneath my bed.

A woman’s voice whispered, “Don’t look up.”

Above me, slow footsteps crossed the ceiling.

I held my breath. Dust drifted down. Something long and pale slipped through a crack in the plaster.

“Please,” the woman whispered. “Pretend you’re dead.”

The footsteps stopped.

A voice from the ceiling asked, very politely, “Is there room for one more?”

From beneath the floor, a dozen voices answered together.

“No.”
