What’s a country that’s at the top of your bucket list?
Oh, that’s an easy one!
EGYPT!
And more specifically…
The Pyramids of Giza.
I’ve been fascinated by ancient Egypt for as long as I can remember.
The pyramids, the pharaohs, the temples, the hieroglyphics, the mythology and all those mysteries that have survived for thousands of years.
There’s something about ancient civilisations that captures my imagination.
I don’t just want to read about them in books or watch documentaries.
I want to stand there.
To look up at the Great Pyramid and try to imagine what life was like when it was built.
To see those enormous stones with my own eyes.
To think about the people who worked on them, the knowledge they possessed and the incredible achievements they left behind.
And knowing myself, I’d probably stand there for ages, completely lost in thought.
While everyone else was taking selfies, I’d be wondering what stories those stones could tell if only they could speak.
I’d love to explore the temples, learn more about the ancient Egyptian beliefs and see the magnificent artwork and symbols that have survived through the centuries.
And, of course, there’s the spiritual side of it.
The ancient Egyptians had such fascinating beliefs about life, death, the soul and the journey beyond this world.
As someone who has always been interested in mythology, astrology and spirituality, I find that world particularly intriguing.
I’d probably have a thousand questions.
And knowing me, another thousand before lunchtime!
Of course, there’s one little complication.
The heat.
After surviving the Fuerteventura calima, I’m not entirely sure I should voluntarily book myself a holiday in another desert.
Imagine travelling all the way to Egypt, finally standing in front of the pyramids, and announcing:
“Djezes! It’s like being back home!”
So perhaps I’d choose a cooler time of year.
And I’d definitely make sure there was air conditioning.
I’ve already had enough adventures involving desert dust and overheated humans.
The aliens from Arena 51 can confirm that.
But jokes aside, Egypt is somewhere I genuinely hope to visit one day.
Not simply to tick another country off a list.
But to experience a place I’ve wondered about for so many years.
To walk among the remains of an extraordinary civilisation.
To feel that connection between the present and a past so distant that it’s almost impossible to comprehend.
And perhaps, for a moment, to stand quietly before the Great Pyramid and simply take it all in.
Some places call to us because they’re beautiful. Others call to us because they hold stories we’ve been longing to discover.
Egypt has been calling me for a very long time.
