Three Things Challenge #MM570

Today’s three words:

QUIVERING • QUILTING • QUITTING

7 October 2026

The Unfinished Quilt

The quilt had been sitting in the cupboard for eleven years.

Every so often, Evelyn took it out, unfolded it across the bed and told herself:

This year I’ll finish it.

She never did.

She had started quilting it with her mother.

They had spent Sunday afternoons together choosing scraps of fabric from old dresses, curtains and clothes the children had outgrown.

Every square contained a memory.

The yellow flowers came from a summer dress her mother had worn almost to pieces.

The blue cotton had once been a little boy’s shirt.

There was fabric from a Christmas tablecloth, an old apron and even a tiny piece from the curtains that had hung in Evelyn’s childhood bedroom.

Her mother used to laugh whenever Evelyn’s stitches wandered.

“Nothing handmade is supposed to be perfect,” she’d say.

Then her mother became ill.

The quilt was folded away.

After she died, Evelyn couldn’t touch it.

For years she told herself she was quitting.

She should finish what they’d begun.

Surely that was what her mother would have wanted.

But every time she threaded the needle, grief returned with it.

Then one rainy afternoon, eleven years later, Evelyn opened the cupboard again.

She spread the quilt across her lap.

Her fingers were quivering as they travelled over those old pieces of fabric.

And suddenly she understood.

The quilt wasn’t unfinished.

It was simply waiting.

Waiting until remembering hurt a little less than forgetting.

She threaded the needle.

Her first stitch was crooked.

Evelyn stared at it for a moment.

Then she laughed.

She could almost hear her mother’s voice.

Nothing handmade is supposed to be perfect.

So she left the crooked stitch exactly where it was.

And added another beside it.

Not because she had finally stopped grieving.

Not because she had conquered anything.

And certainly not because eleven years had erased the loss.

She simply felt ready to pick up the thread again.

Sometimes putting something down isn’t quitting.

Sometimes we’re only waiting until our hands stop quivering enough to continue.

And sometimes the things we thought we’d abandoned…

have been patiently holding our place

Such a lovely story. I’ve always hated sewing, so quilting wasn’t for me. Thanks for joining in again.
