The Things Nobody Tells You
When you’re pregnant, everyone gives you advice.
Sleep while you can.
Enjoy the peace.
Trust your instincts.
And, of course:
“Your life is going to change.”
That last one always made me laugh afterwards.
Change?
That’s like saying a hurricane might rearrange the garden furniture.

Nobody explains that motherhood will permeate every corner of your life.
You will never again hear silence without wondering what someone is doing.
You develop abilities you didn’t know you possessed.
You can hear a child opening a forbidden cupboard from three rooms away.
You can identify which child shouted “MUM!” purely by tone.
And you acquire the extraordinary ability to place your palm against a forehead and announce:
“You’re warm.”
No thermometer required.
Mother technology.
Then they grow.
Suddenly the little hand that once fitted completely inside your palm belongs to an adult.
The child who once needed you to tie their shoes is driving a car.
The one who climbed into your bed after a nightmare now has worries you can’t chase away simply by turning on the light.
And nobody warns you about that part either.
You spend years teaching your children how to live without you.
Then one day you realise they’re doing exactly that.
And somehow you’re proud and heartbroken at the same time.
But here’s the strange thing.
They may grow taller than you.
They may build lives of their own.
They may insist they never liked the olives you distinctly remember them eating.
But occasionally something happens.
They’re tired.
They’re worried.
They need advice.
And suddenly you hear it again.
“Mum?”
One word.
And you’re right back there.
That tiny hand is resting in your palm again.
Because children grow up.
Motherhood doesn’t.
