The Art of the Deal 😂
I have discovered that I am terrible at bargaining.
Some people can walk into a market, spot something priced at twenty euros and somehow leave carrying it after paying seven euros and receiving a free scarf.
I am not one of those people.
I once stopped at a little market stall and spotted a beautiful handmade bracelet.
“How much?” I asked.
“Fifteen euros.”
This was apparently the moment when I was supposed to negotiate.
I knew this because my husband was standing beside me whispering,
“Offer ten.”
I looked at the woman.
She smiled.
I smiled.
“Fifteen is fine.”
My husband sighed.

“You’re supposed to bargain!”
“But she made it.”
“That isn’t the point.”
“It feels rude.”
The woman was now laughing.
She held up another bracelet.
“Two for twenty-five.”
I looked at my husband triumphantly.
“See! I negotiated.”
“No. She negotiated.”

Then he decided to demonstrate how it was done.
He picked up something from another stall and began the great performance.
“How much?”
“Thirty.”
“Twenty.”
“Twenty-eight.”
“Twenty-two.”
I stood beside him trying to keep my expression completely neutral, although I was beginning to wonder whether we’d still be there at sunset.
“Twenty-five,” the seller said.
My husband nodded.
Deal done.
He looked very pleased with himself.
Until I asked the obvious question.
“Did you actually want that?”
Silence.
The seller started laughing.
I started laughing.
He looked down at his successful purchase.
“Well…”
And that was the nett result of his expert negotiation:
He had saved five euros…
on something he hadn’t intended to buy.
Meanwhile, I had my bracelet.
