For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Grace is our host.

Your ChallengeThis week, break the couple.

Write a poem incorporating one of these couplets.

Choose one:

Broken Couplet — disrupt the expected relationship between the two lines.

Split Couplet — experiment with a longer first line and a shorter second line.

Hinged Couplet — let the second line turn, transform, or change the meaning of the first.

October Has Two Faces

October arrives dressed in amber and gold—
here, she wears dust.

The calendar promises cool evenings and rain—
the thermometer laughs.

Somewhere, leaves loosen their grip on the trees—
here, October still drives with the A/C on.

The sun slips behind the mountains at eight—
twenty-seven degrees refuses to call it autumn.

I open the window expecting a cooler breeze—
Sahara walks in.

The year says it is time to slow down—
my life accelerates.

I tell myself change comes gently with seasons—
sometimes it kicks down the door.

There are things I thought I had left behind—
they learned my address.

There are memories I promised not to revisit—
October remembers.

Yet darkness is not always an ending—
sometimes it reveals the stars.

And what looks like a road disappearing ahead—
may simply be asking me to follow.

So let October keep her two faces—
I have learned to carry mine.

Sounds like quite the life adventure being there and away from your usual Autumn, Maggie! Glad you are documenting this journey through your poetry..its been a pleasure reading your poems. 💛🏝️💛

Thank you so much! 💛🌴💜 It certainly has been an adventure, and after 15 years in the Canary Islands I still sometimes have to remind myself that autumn here doesn’t look anything like the autumn I grew up with in Norway. 😂 I love your thought about documenting the journey through poetry — I hadn’t really looked at it that way, but you’re right. Little pieces of life keep finding their way into the poems. Thank you for travelling along with me. 💜❤️

I quite like the sound of your warm two-faced October, Maggie, as the temperature continues to drop over here, although I prefer mine ‘dressed in amber and gold’. The use of em dashes breaks up the lines and emphasises the turns. These lines resonate with me:

‘Yet darkness is not always an ending—
    sometimes it reveals the stars.’

Thank you so much, Kim! 💜

I must admit, I don’t mind our warm October at all — as long as the heavy calima stays away! 😂 It’s the combination of intense heat and Saharan dust that becomes difficult. Otherwise, I’m quite happy to let you keep the falling temperatures while I borrow a little of your amber and gold.

Thank you, Björn! 😊 I think October really does have two faces — yours may be dressed in amber and gold, while mine is still wearing sunglasses and refusing to turn off the air conditioning.

Thank you so much, Sadje, my friend. 💜🥹

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. October gave me plenty of inspiration this time — even if it still hasn’t quite figured out which season it wants to be!

Don’t know what to expect from two-faced October! Your couplets tell both sides of the story, Maggie…well done!

Thank you so much, Lynn! 💜😂
I’m beginning to think two-faced October doesn’t know what to expect from itself either! I really enjoyed using the hinged couplets to let one line tell one side of the story and the next turn it around. I’m so glad that came through.

I love that each second line is a contrast to the first. The 2 faces of October suits me too. Love the entire poem.
