The Knickers on the Door Knocker
October had barely begun when somebody knocked on the door.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
Bella immediately announced that civilisation was under attack.
I put down my coffee and went to investigate.
By the time I opened the door, nobody was there.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then I noticed something hanging from the knocker.
A pair of purple knickers.
My purple knickers.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake.”
I grabbed them and looked up and down the road.
Nobody.
Although I’m fairly certain I saw a curtain move in the neighbour’s window.
The previous evening I’d hung some washing outside. During the night, the wind had apparently decided that my laundry needed to explore Fuerteventura.
A towel was caught against the fence.
One sock had made it into a bush.
A T-shirt was halfway across the garden.
And my knickers?
Apparently they’d emigrated next door.
One of the neighbours must have found them, recognised their likely point of origin, walked over, carefully hung them from our front-door knocker…
and then knocked.
They could have simply handed them to me.
But no.
Where would the entertainment be in that?
I was still standing there holding the evidence when my husband asked from inside,
“Who was at the door?”
“Nobody.”
“What did they want?”
I looked at the purple knickers dangling from my hand.
“To return something.”
There was a pause.
Then he started laughing.
And here’s the kicker:
About ten minutes later—
KNOCK! KNOCK!
Again.
I opened the door faster this time.
Still nobody.
But hanging proudly from the knocker was…
another pair.
Somewhere nearby, I could hear laughter.
“VERY FUNNY!” I shouted.
More laughter.
I closed the door and looked at my husband.
“If they find my bra, we’re moving.”
Welcome to October.
Apparently, even my underwear has a social life.
