What do you see # 359, 21 September, 2026

What You See

You see my eyes
looking straight into yours,
steady and unafraid.

You see the smallest smile,
just enough to make you wonder
what thought caused it.

You see my face.

But you do not see
the roads that brought me here,
the doors I closed behind me,
the storms I walked through
without an umbrella.

You cannot see the nights
when courage was nothing grand—
only getting up the next morning
and trying once more.

You cannot see
the words I swallowed,
the tears I refused to explain,
or the dreams I protected
when others told me
to let them go.

Perhaps you look at me
and think you know who I am.

That’s the curious thing
about photographs.

They capture a face
in a fraction of a second,

but a lifetime
cannot fit inside a frame.

So look again.

That almost-smile?

Perhaps I know something
you don’t.

Perhaps I’ve finally learned
that I don’t have to explain
every chapter of my story
to someone who has only seen
the cover.

You see me.

But only I know
everything it took
to become the woman
looking back at you.

A lifetime cannot fit inside a frame.’ What a perfect observation. Your poem speaks to how much of our stories remains invisible to others, yet shapes everything about who we’ve become. Really moving.

Thank you so much 💜 That line became the heart of the poem for me. We can look at someone’s face and think we see them, but there are years of love, loss, laughter, battles, dreams and memories behind that single moment. A photograph captures the face — never the whole story.

A very profound poem Maggie. A photo can only give us a glimpse in one moment of someone’s life. Beautifully captured my friend. Thanks for joining in.

Thank you so much, Sadje 💜 Your beautiful image really made me think about how easily we believe we know someone from what we can see. A photograph may capture one moment, but behind that moment is an entire lifetime of stories we may never know. Thank you for the inspiration, my friend.

Powerful and poignant poem, Maggie. Yes, a moment can’t capture a journey. Beautifully articulated.

We may think we can read people’s thoughts, but we cannot. As they say, one should never judge a book by its cover.

Exactly, Keith. 💜 We can sometimes convince ourselves that we know what someone is thinking or what their life has been like simply by looking at them, but there can be an entire story hidden behind one expression. As you say, never judge a book by its cover. Thank you for reading.
