Three Things Challenge #MM561

Today’s three words:

HIJACK•HIPPIE•HILLY

The Day the Mountain Hijacked Our Plans

oday’s three words unlocked a memory I hadn’t thought about for a while.

Years ago, when we were living on Gran Canaria, my husband was driving us somewhere — and somehow our journey became completely hijacked by curiosity.

We ended up following one of those winding, hilly roads that climbs higher and higher into the mountains.

It was late November or perhaps the beginning of December.

Down by the coast, we were still dressed in summer clothes.

The higher we climbed, however, the more we began to realise that perhaps nobody had informed us that Gran Canaria has more than one climate. 😂

When we eventually reached a tiny mountain village, the people there were wearing considerably more clothes than we were.

There was even smoke coming from the chimneys.

And there we stood looking as though we’d accidentally taken a wrong turn on the way to the beach.

We stopped for coffee.

Of course we did. ☕😂

The village was small, the atmosphere warm and friendly, and before I quite knew what was happening, an elderly gentleman approached me.

He had a flower.

A Hawaiian-style hibiscus.

He gently placed it in my hair.

And then…

He started dancing with me.

There I was, in a tiny mountain village on Gran Canaria, wearing summer clothes and a flower in my hair, dancing with a man I’d never met before.

All I needed was a flowing tie-dye dress and I could have completed the hippie look. 🌺✌️😂

The girls thought the whole thing was wonderful.

They already spoke Spanish fluently, so while we drank our coffee, they happily chatted and danced with the older people as though this had been our destination all along.

It hadn’t.

Not remotely.

But that’s what made it special.

We hadn’t booked anything.

We hadn’t planned anything.

We had simply followed a road.

And all these years later, I don’t remember what we originally intended to do that day.

But I remember the little village.

I remember the smoke curling from the chimneys.

I remember the coffee.

I remember our girls laughing and dancing.

And I remember an old gentleman placing a flower in my hair and asking a complete stranger to dance.

Sometimes the journeys that don’t go according to plan are the ones that stay with us forever.

We thought we’d taken a detour.

Instead, we found a memory.

Years later, you remember the journey, not the destination. This is such a profound truth about travel and life. The best experiences often come when we’re willing to be hijacked by curiosity. Lovely piece.

      Thank you my friend 💜

Sometimes curiosity really does take us exactly where we didn’t know we needed to go. 💜

This is so lovely! Hubby and I often used to follow a road just to see where it went. Not so much now though. No wonderful results like yours though! Thanks for joining in.
