This week my question is;

Would you prefer to have flawless writing with the help of AI or Grammerly, or make do with your own effort that may not be perfect?

Sunday Poser # 305- Flawless writing with AI?

This is an interesting question for me because my relationship with language has never been quite straightforward.

English was my first spoken language, but when I started school in Norway, my first written languages became Norwegian — both Bokmål and Nynorsk.

And I have a confession that I’ve always been a little embarrassed about: I didn’t properly learn to read until late in third grade or the beginning of fourth grade.

Perhaps that’s one reason I’ve become such a perfectionist about my writing.

These days, I write almost every day. Poetry, stories, blog posts, lyrics — whatever decides to crawl out of my brain. 😂 And yes, I use grammar tools to help clean things up.

Give me the strange expressions, the occasional grammatical wobble and, most importantly, the typos.

Because sometimes a typo has plans of its own. 🤣

My most famous recent example happened when I accidentally wrote Arena 51.

Here on Fuerteventura, we have the Arena Negra music festival. Somewhere inside my brain, Arena Negra and the mysterious Area 51 apparently met, fell madly in love and had a baby.

Arena 51 was born. 👽😂

Instead of correcting it and forgetting about it, we started joking about it.

Then the joke became an idea.

The idea became lyrics.

And somehow my ridiculous little typo became an EDM track — “Arena 51 – The Calima Conspiracy”, being released on 2 October. 👽🎶

So perhaps flawless isn’t always better.

I’ll happily use technology to catch the missing commas, tidy up my grammar and point out the mistakes I don’t notice.

But I don’t want it to replace my own imagination or voice.

And every now and then, perhaps we should let a typo escape.

You never know when it might release a single. 🤣👽

Hehe 😂 Thank you Carol anne 😘.

I used my DJ experience and made my own techno/EDM song.
My husband listen to them on repeat and laughing his ass off 🤭

this topic will continue to be a forefront of discussion. there is no doubt in my mind that large language models will approach verbal proficiency that will match or even supplant the ability of most speakers and writers.

however, I will say that in my reading journey throughout the years, i have found that the very best authors can convey a sense or a mood in varying staccatos and tempos. and it doesn’t necessarily have to do with the depth of their vocabulary or a dependence on superfluous run-on sentences. their own sense of prose will carry their pieces, and large language models can only touch approximations of it.

it doesn’t mean that the possibility is 100% they’ll never be able to do it but it just means that, until large language models are able to hold time, repetition, and verbal nuance in a conscious tension, an exceptional literary work or post created by a human will hold more emotional conveyance than one created by a computer.

I had AI write this. LOL, just kidding 😂😂😂

    Have a great day Maggie.

😂😂😂 Mike, you absolutely got me with that ending! I was reading this very seriously and nodding along, and then — “I had AI write this.” 🤣

I agree with you, though. There is something in a writer’s individual rhythm, emotion and lived experience that matters far more to me than technically perfect sentences.

Thanks for such a thoughtful (and sneaky!) response, Mike. Have a wonderful day too! 💜

😄👍🏼👍🏼 im glad it was entertaining. but yes, your written words on this described the problem perfectly and that level of description will be the human premium we will all want in time!

I really like your phrase “the human premium,” Mike. 😊 I think that may become increasingly important too. Perhaps as technology becomes better at producing technically perfect language, it will be our individual quirks, experiences, humour and even imperfections that make a piece recognisably ours. And sometimes those imperfections create something we never planned — as my Arena 51 typo certainly proved! 😂👽🎶 Thanks for coming back to continue the conversation. 💜

Thank you so much, Sadje. 💜 I’m delighted that my accidental typo gave you a smile. 😂 I never imagined when I typed “Arena 51” that it would eventually become two EDM tracks! 👽🎶 I hope you enjoy them when they arrive on October 2nd. And thank you for always giving us such thought-provoking questions. 💜
